Everything you need to know about integrated roof panels and if they are right for you.

What are integrated roof panels?

Instead of sitting on top of the roof tiles or slates, the solar panels replace them. This means that the solar panels form part of the roof itself rather than being an addition to it. Firstly a section of the roof is removed to expose the underlying structure. Plastic trays are attached to the structure and a waterproof membrane is fitted. Solar Panels are then installed on top of the membrane and sit flush with the surrounding tiles.

What are the advantages of integrated panels?

  1. Aesthetics: integrated panels have a sleeker look to them as they blend in more with the roof.
  2. Easier installation in new roofs: if you’re already getting a new roof installed then the integrated panels can be fitted the same time as the roof tiles.
  3. Resistance to high wind: in-roof panels are very secure as there are no gaps for the wind to get underneath and potentially dislodge the panel.

What are the disadvantages of integrated panels?

  1. Retrofit trouble: Although in-roof panels are convenient to install when a new roof is going up, when they are being retrofitted this can lead to an increased cost due to the more in depth work involved.
  2. Less energy produced: Roof integrated panels operate at a higher temperature than on-roof panels meaning they generate around 3% less energy than on-roof panels but for many the improved aesthetics could be worth the slightly lower generation capacity.
  3. Price: Integrated panels tend to be a little pricier than traditional on-roof options, but costs can be significantly reduced if the installation is done as part of refurbishment or a new-build.
